Use songs to help your child’s expressive language skills.

Children enjoy familiar rhymes and songs and will attempt sounds and words if they are repeated numerous times.

Use a CD if you prefer not to sing and pause it to allow your child to have their turn attempting to sing the song.

Continue to praise and respond to your child’s sounds.

Play

Action songs are a fun and engaging way for your child to learn vocabulary. They also help to enhance listening skills and attention skills and promote an interest in music and singing as they grow older. Play songs on a CD if you would prefer not to sing the action songs.

To further extend this activity you can incorporate finger puppets and have the puppets perform the actions in the songs. This will engage a child who requires extra support with attention skills and will help sustain their attention for longer. Your child will enjoy repeating sounds to the same songs and will begin to attempt more words as they grow older.
